Choosing the Best Word

Language is often contextual ”the language you use in a presentation to club members is different from the language you use in a business presentation. To make sure you are using words that best convey your meaning in any given context, you can use PowerPoint s Thesaurus to look up alternative words, or synonyms, for a selected word. To use the Thesaurus, you select the word you want to look up, and on the Tools menu, click Thesaurus. The Research task pane appears, displaying a list of synonyms with equivalent meanings.

In this exercise, you will access the Thesaurus and replace a word with a more appropriate one.

USE the Thesaurus presentation in the practice file folder for this topic. This practice file is located in the My Documents\Microsoft Press\PowerPoint 2003 SBS\WorkingText\Choosing folder and can also be accessed by clicking Start/All Programs/Microsoft Press/PowerPoint 2003 Step by Step .

OPEN the Thesaurus presentation.

  1. Move to Slide 2, and double-click the word Comfortable in the title.

  2. On the Tools menu, click Thesaurus .

    The Research task pane appears, listing synonyms for the word comfortable .

  3. Click the minus sign to the left of comfy to bring more of the synonym list into view.

  4. Point to the word relaxed , click the down arrow that appears to the right, and click Insert on the drop-down menu.

    You can also simply click the word to insert it. Word replaces Comfortable with Relaxed , mirroring the existing punctuation.

  5. On the Standard toolbar, click the Save button to save the document.

CLOSE the Thesaurus presentation and the Research task pane, and if you are not continuing on to the next chapter, quit PowerPoint.
