Chapter 4: Editing AutoCAD Objects

Overview

This chapter is about editing AutoCAD objects. By editing, I mean performing the operations to change existing objects in your drawing. If you want to know how to move, copy, or rotate an object, this chapter is the place to look. Of course, AutoCAD can do much more.

If you're in a hurry, you might want to skim this chapter to get an idea of what you can do in AutoCAD in terms of editing objects. Or if you are looking for some instruction right now, check the list of chapter topics to see whether the information you need is here.

If you're completely new to AutoCAD, you might want to read the first half of this chapter as a primer, especially since editing in AutoCAD is an integral part of creating new drawings.

The beginning of this chapter covers some basic information that is crucial to just about all the AutoCAD editing commands. Selecting objects, for example, is something you'll be doing a lot, so I explain it in detail. I also explain grip editing, a method of editing that is fairly common in most graphics programs. You'll learn how Dynamic Input provides a way to edit the properties of individual objects. Finally, I'll introduce the Properties palette, an important tool for editing in AutoCAD.
