Storing Your Printer Settings

You'll most likely have to print an AutoCAD drawing many times over the course of a project. Not only that, but each time you print a drawing, you might want to use the same settings. To help you keep consistency in your printing, AutoCAD offers the Page Setup Manager dialog box.

If you did the exercise at the beginning of this chapter, you encountered the Page Setup option in the Plot dialog box. There, you made some plotter settings and then saved the settings as a page setup called Setup1. You don't have to save your printer settings in a setup, but doing so can be a real time-saver.

The Page Setup group at the top of the Plot dialog box lets you select from a drop-down list of setups you've created. You can also create and manage setups through the Page Setup Manager dialog box. You can get to the Page Setup Manager and edit or create new setups by doing the following:

  1. In AutoCAD, choose File è Page Setup Manager, or right-click a layout tab and choose Page Setup Manager to open the Page Setup Manager dialog box, as shown in Figure 12.20.

  2. Click the New button to open the New Page Setup dialog box, as shown in Figure 12.21.

  3. To create a new page setup, enter a name in the New Page Setup Name input box, and then select a prototype setup from the Start With list box. AutoCAD offers the name of Setup1 as a default for a new setup, but it will be helpful to give your setup a name to help you remember the purpose of the setup.

  4. Click OK when you're finished. The Page Setup dialog box opens. This dialog box is nearly identical to the Plot dialog box, with a few options made unavailable.

  5. Make your custom settings, and then click OK. You return to the Page Setup Manager dialog box. You'll see your new page setup in the Current Page Setup list box.

  6. You can select a page setup from the list box and then click the Set Current button to make it the current page setup for the layout. You can also select a page setup from the Page Setup group of the Plot dialog box (see Figure 12.22).

Page setups are stored with the drawing, but if you want to import a setup from another drawing, you can do so by clicking the Import option in the Page Setup Manager dialog box. A standard file dialog box opens in which you can select a drawing file that contains the page setup you want to import. Here, the trick is to remember the drawing in which you stored the desired setup.

The current page setup applies to the current layout tab, but once you create a new page setup, it is displayed as an option in the Page Setup Manager dialog box for all other layout tabs.
