Hotspots are 802.11b-compliant public network nodes available to wireless users that are often located in heavily populated places such as airports, train stations , shops , marinas, conventions centers and hotels. Hotspots typically have a short range of access and are oriented on a specific geographic location. There are thousands of these locations that offer free or low-cost wireless access to the Internet and network resources. Hotspot will change our culture by providing high-speed Internet access anywhere and at all the times.

Many retailers have made the business decision to install hotspots to increase sales of their products. National and international hotels, bakeries and coffee houses use the free access to attract customers in the hopes that more coffee and pastries are sold as users access high speed connection points. Users have ready access to the outside and with virtual private network connections, and can easily reach back to the office to retrieve content from the corporate network. The use of hotspots has created a new culture of users who think wireless access should be open and free.

Organizations such as Community Wireless and its Community Wireless Networking Project partners plan to provide free wireless access to all ( http://www.communitywireless.org/ ). Using commercial off the shelf and license-free WLAN technology (802.11), various groups and individuals are embracing bandwidth and content, and sharing it with their community. There are projects partners across the globe that have realized that wireless networking is for the masses and they hope to attract business community support on the idea.
