Placing Multimedia Content on a Web Page

The following sections show you how to add some audio and video to a web page in two ways:

  • The "old way" for maximum compatibility with all web browsers, including very old ones

  • The "new way" that works only with the latest versions of web browsers, but serves as the official standard technique for the present and future

By the Way

I use QuickTime video (.mov), Windows Media Video (.wmv), streaming RealAudio (.ra, .ram), and MIDI (.mid) sound files in this hour's sample pages. I've done this primarily for better compatibility with non-Windows computers. However, you could just as easily use Windows AVI or MPEG video files, as well as MP3, Windows Media Audio, or even AAC (iTunes) audio files. The good news is that the procedures shown in this hour for incorporating multimedia into your web pages are the same, no matter which media format you choose.
