An integral factor in the stability of MetaFrame XP has a great deal to do with the initial installation. Proper installation sets the pace for the performance and stability of every server, and must be performed correctly. During the course of installing a single server, a variety of options must be configured, including the data store, farm name, zone information, administrative options, interoperability with MetaFrame 1.8, NFuse, and licensing. Proper selection of how these items will be used must be performed during this step. For example, once shadowing options are selected during installation, they cannot be altered without reinstalling MetaFrame XP.

For larger environments where multiple servers require deployment, Citrix has provided support for automating the installation process. Support for unattended installation scripts and server cloning assist administrators in deploying multiple MetaFrame XP servers with minimal involvement, and with consistency. Both options require planning to test and implement each technology. This includes understanding the caveats involved.

A key component of implementing MetaFrame XP is designing the server farm. It is necessary that this be done prior to any installation work. The design should be based upon the existing computing environment, and take into consideration any business requirements that may affect it. Accounting for items such as single versus multiple farms, the data store database and how it is accessed, and zone layout is necessary to properly prepare for MetaFrame XP.

To allow environments a migration path from older versions of MetaFrame, Citrix has provided the capability for MetaFrame XP to coexist in the same farm as MetaFrame 1.8. Although a temporary solution, this allows a seamless migration path for users and administrators, if planned properly. Understanding this feature is critical to preventing any negative impact on the existing environment.

Once MetaFrame XP has been installed, client software must be made available for deployment. Similar to MetaFrame 1.8, MetaFrame XP provides the capability to maintain a database of client files and information for deployment. Utilities are available to assist in managing this environment, as well as automate the client installation and update process.
