Native mode

Native mode provides compatibility within a server farm consisting of Citrix MetaFrame XP 1.0 servers only. Advantages for using native mode include that ICA Browser service is disabled on all servers within the farm limiting the broadcast traffic required on your network. IMA traffic used in its place is not based on broadcast traffic; Program Neighborhood services are disabled on all servers within the farm; data collectors are used instead of the ICA browser service; and data are not shared with Citrix MetaFrame 1.8 servers located within the same farm.

Net appliances

Net appliances typically come with a keyboard, mouse, and small screen, but no hard drive. The OS is usually embedded in ROM or FLASH, and no files are stored locally. The low power of the CPU prevents the appliance from running mainstream applications natively, but with the use of an ICA client, the appliance can run any application the server can provide. Most net appliances provide a parallel or USB port for a printer, so documents created in an ICA session can be printed locally.

NetBIOS Extended User Interface (NetBEUI)

The transport layer for the DOS networking protocol called Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS).

Network Address Translation (NAT)

Most firewalls have the ability of using a technology called network address translation (NAT). Using NAT with Citrix, each MetaFrame server receives an alternate IP address. Only ICA Clients that know the alternate address will pass through the firewall.

Network bandwidth

Network bandwidth plays an important role in system performance and user experience. Since all the processing occurs on the server and clients are in constant communication, server-based computing requires more, not less, available network bandwidth.

Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS)

A program in Microsoft's operating systems that links personal computers to Local Area Network (LAN).

Network Interface Card (NIC)

A board with encoding and decoding circuitry and a receptacle for a network cable connection that, bypassing the serial ports and operating through the internal bus, allows computers to be connected at higher speeds to media for communications between stations.

Network Manager

This works with third-party SNMP consoles to provide systems management capabilities to MetaFrame XP servers. The Network Manager consists of an SNMP agent and plug-ins that support HP OpenView and Tivoli NetView. With the SNMP console it is possible to remotely manage your MetaFrame XPe servers using the same network management package that may be in use elsewhere on your network. With Network Manager and your third-party SNMP console of choice, you can shut down and restart MetaFrame XPe servers, disconnect, log off and send messages to active session on a MetaFrame XPe server and Terminal processes running on MetaFrame XPe servers.

Network Monitor (NetMon)

This is a network diagnostic tool that is provided with Windows NT and Windows 2000. The version that comes with NT and Windows 2000 is the light version, the full version is part of Microsoft Systems Manager Server (SMS). Network Monitor is used to monitor network traffic and troubleshoot network-related events and such as a server that is sending or receiving an inordinate amount of traffic, misconfigured workstations, printers and servers.

Network printers

Printers that reside on a network print server or on a MetaFrame XP server outside the server farm. A printer shared from an ICA client device or from a network workstation is also considered a network printer by all other clients on the network. Citrix clients have the option of using network printers just like any Windows client on the network.

Nfuse

NFuse provides some industry standard techniques for securing information across communication channels in addition to providing some added security of its own, allowing secure communication between all three tiers. NFuse also provides a large number of client devices and server platforms to participate within this Web-enabled technology. In addition, server-side scripting and configuration can create a single point of access for all users connecting to NFuse. When using NFuse and forcing encryption at the connection level, you may experience problems where users have a secure client, launch an application via NFuse but still receive the message that they do not meet the required encryption level. The easiest way to fix this, if you do not mind running encryption for every session (which you must not, since you set it at the connection level), is to set each application to use the encryption level you forced at the connection level.

Node item

Node items are containers (and management tools) which contain objects that represent resources or items that can be managed in the server farm such as Applications and Citrix Administrators. Each node item with a (+) next to it will reveal nested specific items and features of the server farm beneath them.

Non-Windows ICA clients

Other operating systems can also act as clients and connect to the MetaFrame XP server. This allows MetaFrame XP to coexist in various computing environments, thus earning the name 'Independent Computing Architecture.'

NT File System (NTFS)

The NT File System (with filenames up to 255 characters) is a system created to aid the computer and its components recover from hard disk crashes.
