License pooling

One of the most important features of using mixed mode operation is the capability to share licenses between MetaFrame 1.8 and MetaFrame XP servers. MetaFrame 1.8 servers with connection licenses installed can share these with all servers located within the mixed mode server farm. In addition, MetaFrame XP servers can pool connection licenses it maintains to any MetaFrame 1.8 server within the farm located on the same subnet.

License threshold

This monitors both assigned and pooled MetaFrame XP connection licenses in use on the server. This rule by default will report full load when either the number of assigned licenses in use is greater than ten or the number of pooled licenses in use is greater than 50. By default it will also report no load when either of these counts are equal to zero.

Load balancing

Load balancing works by distributing the clients that connect across the servers in the server farm. Applications or entire desktops can be published and load balanced, providing that all servers have the application or desktop in common. Unfortunately, this capability is not available in a mixed mode server farm. When load balancing applications across a mixture of MetaFrame versions, only the basic load balancing parameters available in MetaFrame 1.8 are available.

Load Evaluators

A Load Evaluator is a set of rules used to calculate load on a MetaFrame server in your farm. These Load Evaluators can be assigned to specific servers or to published applications in the MetaFrame farm. Each rule within a Load Evaluator consists of an identifier, a description of the rule and threshold settings that can be adjusted on a rule-by-rule basis. A Load Evaluator can consist of only one rule or use many in concert. When several rules are used the Load Management system uses the rules together to determine the overall load of the server. The MetaFrame servers use Load Evaluators to determine their current load. When the load for a server changes, whether it increases or decreases, this new information is sent to the Zone Data Collector. This means all new client connections are routed through the Data Collector.

Load Manager

Load Manager is an option that installs with MetaFrame XP but requires a separate license to activate. Its function is to balance the workload across servers in a MetaFrame XP server farm. When a user launches a published application or desktop, Load Manager determines which server in the farm has the lightest load and places the user on that server. Load Manager is not a fault-tolerant solution like clustering, but a high-availability feature.

Local Area Network (LAN)

A system using high-speed connections over high-performance cables to communicator among computers within a few miles of each other, allowing users to share peripherals and a massive secondary storage unit, the file server. By default, the listener will be bound to all the LAN (local area network) adapters that are configured with the selected protocol, and there will be unlimited connections available on the listener. See also Wireless LANs.

Local host cache

The local host cache is an Access database that is stored locally on each server in the farm to cache farm information. This database increases performance because it is not necessary to contact the data store every time a client queries the server. The local host cache also maintains enough information to allow the server to operate for up to 48 hours in the absence of the data store. During this period, the server will continue to attempt to contact the data store on a regular basis. If the data store is not contacted within 48 hours, the server will invalidate its licensing information and discontinue taking new connections.

Local printers

Printers that are directly connected, via cable or port, to a MetaFrame XP server in the server farm. Local printers in a MetaFrame environment are added to the server just as you would add a printer to a Windows NT workstation or a Windows 2000 Professional Workstation. Adding a local printer to a MetaFrame server involves following the Add Printer Wizard in the Printers folder of the server.
