Event Viewer and System Information

  • The Event Viewer can be used to monitor, detect, and troubleshoot events that take place on a server.

  • The Event Log can be managed through the associated property sheets. Properties include maximum log size, overwrite/clear log manually, and filtering.

  • The System Information Tools are located in the Microsoft Management Console and contains information about the server hardware and software that can be monitored and viewed but not modified.

  • The System Summary provides information about the system's basic configuration, including OS version, BIOS version, installed/available memory, and page file size.

  • The information contained in the System Information Tool can be saved to a text or .inf file by right-clicking the desired folder and selecting Save As.

  • The Event ID, Source, and Description are important because they can point you to the component that reported the event and they can be used to locate information in the Microsoft and Citrix Knowledge Bases.

  • In Windows 2000, ERD disks can be created from the Backup utility located under Accessories | System Tools. Windows 2000 ERDs no longer include the registry hives, but can be useful when you cannot boot your system.

  • A baseline can help to determine how well a system is performing and help spot potential problems or bottlenecks before they happen.

  • Performance Monitor and Resource Manager are tools that can be used to monitor and develop a baseline for your system.
