Chapter 7: Building a Web Services Workflow

Overview

A Hotel Reservation System

We have looked at how to build a Web services call. Even more value can come from exposing entire processes, or workflows, through Web services. In this chapter we will build on our ability to expose a single call by linking multiple calls together to expose a Web services workflow.

Since Chapter 1, I have been referencing a hotel reservation system as a sample Web service, so our workflow will be based on those examples. We are playing the role of a hotel chain owner who wants to allow external applications to check room availability and book rooms on their existing systems. This service will target both large travel sites as well as isolated niche applications that might want to reserve rooms. A good example of the latter scenario would be an event site that has an exclusive arrangement with the hotel to provide discounted rooms for attendees. The Web service should be generic enough to fit all of these scenarios.
