Lost Password

Sometimes an administrator will find that he has inherited the job of caring for a network's switch from someone else. That past employee had the passwords to the switch buried somewhere in his head and now he is nowhere to be found. This means that you need to recover the password to the switch. A lost password on the Cisco Catalyst 5000 switch can be recovered using the following steps:

  1. Attach a workstation to the console port.

  2. Recycle the power on the switch.

  3. Press the Enter key at the prompt. There is a null password for the first 30 seconds. This means that you can press the Enter key from the console because the password is blank.

  4. Use the enable command and press Enter again for the password. Again there is a null password, meaning no password is required for the first 30 seconds.

  5. Use the set password and set enablepass commands to set the password.

If you are using a Supervisor III or IV Engine, the password recovery steps are as follows :

  1. Turn the switch off, and then back on.

  2. Within seconds of turning the switch back on, press control+C to prevent autobooting. You will now be at a ROM Monitor Prompt mode.

  3. Enter the confreg command at the ROM Monitor Prompt.

  4. Type reset to make the module reboot.

  5. Type enable at the Switch prompt, and then use the show version command to check the configuration register value. Verify that the configuration register value is 0x2142, which will force the module to boot from the Flash and ignore any saved configuration. It should appear as "Configuration register is 0x2142."

  6. Type the copy startup-config running-config command to save the configuration.

Do not use the configure terminal command to save the configuration or there will be only a default configuration on the module.

  7. Change the configuration register value back to 0x2102 at the config prompt.
