Understanding the Outlook Window

The menu bar contains the various Outlook menus that are available to you. To display a menu's commands, click the menu name . You can then click the command you want.

Rather than selecting commands from the menu, you can use toolbar buttons to execute commands. Click the button that represents the command you want to execute.

The Outlook Bar on the left side of the screen is divided into several panes. The top pane(s) displays options for the tool you select in the bottom pane. For instance, if you select the Mail tool, you see Mail options.

INTRODUCTION

When you start Outlook, the Outlook window opens. It includes several panes of information as well as access to the different tools. Use this task to familiarize yourself with the various parts of the window.

In the bottom pane of the Outlook Bar, you click the tool you want to work with. For instance, click the Calendar tool to view the Calendar options.

You can use the buttons in the Outlook Bar to activate certain Outlook features. For instance, to display a folder list, click the Folder List button.

In the work area, you see information related to the selected tool. For instance, if you select the Calendar tool in the Outlook Bar, you see the current day's calendar in the work area.

The status bar displays information about the selected tool, such as the number of new messages.

TIP

Customizing the Outlook Window

If you prefer a more streamlined window, without all the options displayed, you can customize the Outlook window to display only the tools you need. Alternatively, you might choose to display additional onscreen elements so you can easily access as many tools as possible. See "Changing the Outlook Window Layout" later in this part to learn how.
