Electronic mail (or email) is a fast, convenient, and inexpensive way to stay connected. You can send a message to anyone with an email address, and it is sent immediately. You can send a message to a friend down the street or to a colleague across the world! The recipient can then, at his or her convenience, respond to your message.

In addition to typing messages, you can send pictures or other documents. For instance, you may want to submit an expense report to your home office, or send pictures of your new puppy to your family.

Windows XP includes a mail program called Outlook Express. You can use this program to create new mail as well as handle mail you have received. This chapter covers the basics of sending and receiving email with Outlook Express.
