Displaying Disk Information

To get an idea of the size of your hard disk and how much space is used, you can display disk information. This is handy if you think you are running out of room for your files. You also access several of Windows XP's disk tools from this dialog box.

To display disk information, follow these steps:

1.

Open the My Computer window. You can click Start and then My Computer. Otherwise, if you added the My Computer icon to your desktop, you can double-click it.

2.

In the My Computer window, right-click the disk for which you want information and click the Properties command. This displays the disk's Properties dialog box. On the General tab, shown in Figure 18.1, you can see the total disk space, the disk space used, and the free space.

Figure 18.1. This hard disk is dangerously full. There is very little free space for storing files.

3.

Click OK to close the dialog box.

Other sections of this chapter cover how to use the tools in this dialog box to improve performance.
