Many beginning computer users are skittish about using the computer. They think they are going to "break" it. Really, there's not much you can do to ruin your computer, but you should take some precautions to guard your datathat is, the document files stored on your computer. Another safety issue is checking a disk for problems or viruses. This chapter covers checking a disk for errors and defines what a virus is, as well as gives advice on how to handle this security issue.

You also learn about using System Restore, which is useful for going "back in time" on your computer. You can use this to troubleshoot any problems that might pop up when you make changes to your computer.

Finally, if you have trouble remembering to perform system maintenance tasks, you can set up Windows so that these tasks are performed automatically at the interval you specify.
