MOTIVATING THE TEAM

Visualizing the goal gives you a vision with which to inspire people who may work on the project with you. It's all very well you being fired up, but what about the people who are going to work on the project with you “ and for projects of any size there will always be other people involved?

Visualizing the goal gives you a vision, a description, of a place somewhere in the future, for which you are all bound. It draws other people into the daydream. There may be dark days ahead “ on most projects there generally are “ and the vision of the goal is what will sustain you and your team during those days. The best example I know of setting your eyes on the prize comes from Martin Luther King's Washington speech in 1963 (Hampton and Freyer, 1990):

I say to you today, my friends , so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American meaning of its creed, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice . I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character
