Chapter 7: Building an Example EJB Application

Overview

In this chapter, we will walk through the design and construction of the business tier of the bigrez.com example application, highlighting key concepts and best practices. While it is not meant as a basic tutorial for constructing EJB components or the business tier of J2EE applications, it will discuss some options available to simplify related construction tasks .

This chapter is organized like Chapters 2 through 4, with the discussion proceeding from requirements to architecture and then to implementation:

  • We identify a set of business-tier requirements to guide the architecture selection process.

  • We identify and examine candidate architectures in light of the requirements to gauge their relative value for our application.

  • We identify and discuss techniques for constructing EJB components.

  • We examine selected business-tier components required for the bigrez.com application to highlight implementation details and best practices.

Ready? We ll start with the requirements.
