After the installation of OES Linux has been completed, there are a number of tasks you are likely anxious to perform. The majority of these tasks are documented in the relevant chapters of this book. However, there are a few basic tasks that are appropriate to mention here. The following topics are contained in this section:
Verifying Your OES Linux InstallationDepending on the OES components you selected for installation, there are a number of methods you can use to confirm that the installation was successful. The easiest way to confirm that your OES components are properly configured and started is by accessing the OES Linux Welcome pages. To access the Welcome pages, use a browser to access the following URL: http://<OES_Linux_Server_IP_Address_Or_DNS_Name> If your OES installation was successful, you should see the Welcome pages as shown in Figure 2.8. Figure 2.8. OES component Welcome pages. At this point, you can follow the iManager 2.5.x link to begin customizing your eDirectory environment. For further confirmation that your OES components have been successfully installed, use the Add and Remove Software module of YaST to ensure that the OES components are marked as being installed. Post-Install OES Component ConfigurationDuring the installation of OES, the configuration of each individual OES component can be modified. It is also possible to access those same component configuration pages after installation. These pages are available through component-specific modules in YaST. YaST can be accessed from a terminal or from within the graphical environment. To access YaST from a terminal, execute yast. To access YaST from a graphical environment, execute yast2 or use the YaST launcher from the application menu. YaST is divided into the following seven general categories:
Beneath each category there are modules used to configure specific components of OES Linux. Many of these modules are used to configure traditional SLES components, such as the system language and date and time. However, OES-specific component administration can also be performed through YaST. Table 2.2 lists the location of these OES-specific modules.
For more information on using these modules, check the Table of Contents in this book, or refer to the online OES documentation. Updating OES Linux Components Using Red-CarpetAfter completing the installation of OES Linux, it is a good idea to check for OES updates using the OES online update toolRed-Carpet. Red-Carpet, or the companion terminal-based rug, can be accessed from the Software category of YaST. From within this category, the Online Update module can be used to begin the update process. If this is the first time you have performed an online update, you will be required to register your server using your Novell ID and Password, which you should have received when you purchased this product. After activation, you should be able to easily select available OES patches and apply those to your new server. For a more detailed explanation of this process, please see the "Updating OES Linux" section of Chapter 6. |
