Aims of this chapter

The aim of this chapter is to show you what you need to know to plan and manage your projects to the right timescale to fit the circumstances. It describes the processes of time management in projects, and the related processes from other project management knowledge areas. By the end of this chapter, you should be able to:

  • list the six processes in project time management, and decide which are relevant to your project;

  • state the difference between activity definition and activity sequencing and why definition should be done before sequencing;

  • draw a network diagram;

  • state two key differences between what is represented on an AOA diagram and on an AON one;

  • briefly state the principle of rolling wave planning;

  • estimate resources required for your project;

  • estimate the duration of your project in two different ways;

  • develop a schedule for your project;

  • state what resource levelling does;

  • control the schedule of your project.
