Notes

1. By way of examples, the Black Scholes method (or developments of it) is used to value options in the capital markets and commodities industries, but is not useful to value options on sequels in the film industry. (This is not to say that no-one is arguing otherwise. Why they would be fundamentally mistaken is outside the scope of this book.)
2. One does not manage a gang of unskilled labourers in quite the same way that one manages a troupe of prima ballerinas, or highly paid solicitors. (This, again, is not to say that no-one is arguing to the contrary, and, again, why they would be misguided to do so is beyond the scope of this book, but will be obvious to anyone who has left the confines of a Marxist university department and tried to make a living as a manager in an organization responsible to its customers.)
3. Farnborough International Air Show, Farnborough, UK, 20 21 July 2006.
4. 'Front-loading' means doing an activity earlier than absolutely necessary, usually in order to gain benefits of risk or cost reduction in the longer term. The price paid is increasing early-stage costs, which is why selling the benefit is important.
5. Critical Chain was developed by Eliyahu Goldratt. See, for example, The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement by Eliyahu M. Goldratt, North River Press Publishing, second edition, 1992, or The Haystack Syndrome by Eliyahu M. Goldratt, North River Press Publishing, 1990.
6. For simplicity here we ignore the corporate finance business, whose function includes to merge businesses. But even then, it is not the corporate finance firm itself that merges on a regular basis.
7. BS 6079-2:2000. Part 2 Vocabulary. British Standards Institute, 15 March 2000. The BSI text includes within brackets numbers referring to other definitions; these brackets and numbers are omitted from our quotation of the BSI definition.
8. APM website, glossary section, http://www.apm.org.uk/PtoQ.asp (July 2006).
