UNDESIRABLE RESULTS OF THE MYTH OF LEADERSHIP


So far I have identified the following undesirable consequences of the myth of leadership:

  • Perception that success (or failure) is due to the people at the top, thereby undervaluing the majority of the employees

  • Huge inequity in pay

  • Belief that the few are meant to lead and the rest to follow, fostering the creation of a culture of secrecy and deceit

  • Growing gap between decision makers and reality due to that culture

  • Underutilization of skills in the organization

  • Fewer innovative strategies

  • Less competitiveness at both strategic and tactical (operational efficiencies) levels

  • Fewer humane and dignified workplaces
