Chapter 8. Mixing to Picture in Pro Tools

Mixing is one the most challenging and creative stages in any recording project. Combining all the recorded material into one finished presentation requires all the skill, experience, and expertise an engineer can provide. With so much material being presented in surround sound these days, the mixing task becomes even more complex. Arranging all the sounds among six speakers instead of two provides many more opportunities for creative expression and at the same time creates the potential for more pitfalls and trouble spots.

Pro Tools provides an environment that is capable of exploiting all the possibilities in a simple stereo mix or in a full 5.1 Surround mix. From a simple narration with music to a complete film mix, Pro Tools has the capabilities to provide you with the ultimate control and flexibility in all of these mixing situations. In this chapter, I'll discuss preparations for mixing, the pre-mixing stages of creating "predubs," the use of automation throughout to create a dynamic and compelling mix, the use of reference levels in order to maintain industry standards, and preparation of your mix for use in multiple formats.
