Chapter 4. Getting Started with Pro Tools and Video

Now that you have a strong background in the technology you'll be using, it's time to configure Pro Tools for working in audio post-production. If you have a HD or TDM system, you are at a distinct advantage because they include a SMPTE time code ruler to help spot audio regions to time code. But it is not necessary to have a SMPTE ruler, and Pro Tools LE systems (002, 001, Mbox, and Toolbox) are capable of working with time code and video via MIDI time code (MTC). Using MTC does require some workarounds and perhaps a dedicated synchronizer to achieve higher precision sync. These workarounds will be explored in this chapter.

WHAT IS SPOTTING?

The term spotting or to spot audio to time code refers to the process of viewing a film or video and deciding at what time code values certain sounds will go. Putting the actual sounds in the correct time code locations is also known as spotting . The term most likely comes from the practice of searching for, or spotting, onscreen elements that will require additional sound in post-production.
