Security Tools on the CD

 < Day Day Up >

We assembled the top tools and placed them on the CD-ROM to provide easy access for administrators who wish to understand the implications of poorly secured systems. The tools are primarily used to scan and enumerate networks and systems.

Note

Several of the tools available on the CD are free under the GNU Public License, which is located on the CD for your review.

The Tools On The CD page includes a list of the tools on the CD, along with the latest URL for each tool, in case you need more information on how to install the tool or you want to download the most recent version online. When you click the tool name or filename, you may see a dialog that reads:

“The file D:\OPENE~14.EXE is set to be launched by this PDF file. The file may contain programs, macros, or viruses that could potentially harm your computer. Only open the file if you are sure it is safe. If this file was placed by a trusted person or program then click Open to view this file.”

Click the box that reads: Do Not Show This Message Again, and click the Open button. Then, Acrobat will take you to the folder where all of the tools are located. There you will find folders for each of the tools. Double-click the tool you want to access and then you will see the actual tool file ready for you to install on your system.

Some of the programs can be used to gain unauthorized access to vulnerable systems. Our suggestion is to set up a couple of default NT, Novell, and UNIX systems in a lab and to walk through the techniques discussed in this book. If you did not think security was an important component of network and system administration, you will most likely have a drastically different perspective after reading the book.

Caution

Use these products with caution and only against nonproduction or lab systems.
