Visiting SAP's Home Page on the World Wide Web

The Internet is one area where SAP is moving very quickly. To see what SAP has developed or is planning this month, check out the company's home page on the Net.

If you have access to a World Wide Web browser (such as Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer), you can visit SAP on its index page at http://www.sap.com/. The SAP home page (see Figure 21.1) is a great source of information about what's new with SAP. Newsletters, technical articles, press releases, and other useful information can all be found there.

Plain English

URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

The "address" of a Web page. Every page on the World Wide Web has its own URL.

CAUTION

It's Not the Same!

If the page on your screen doesn't look like this one, don't worry ”you're still in the right place. The appearance of the SAP page varies from month to month. (Its URL stays the same, though.)

Most of the documents available for download from the SAP page are in Adobe Acrobat format. The extension (the last three characters of the filename) for files in this format is .pdf. Like a magazine, this format is great for printing mixed text and graphics, but the files are usually rather large and take a few minutes to download. To read the .pdf files, you need to download the Adobe Acrobat reader from the Web; you can find it at http://www.adobe.com/acrobat/.

If you decide to print these documents after you download them, note that it can take a long time and (temporarily) use up loads of disk space during printing. On the other hand, browsing them onscreen with the Adobe Acrobat reader is quick and fairly easy. The SAP home page suggests a way that you can download all the PDFs from an issue of its magazine into a directory where you can read it as a single online magazine.
