INTERMEDIATE SYSTEM-TO-INTERMEDIATE SYSTEM (IS-IS)

  1. Know the fundamentals of OSI protocols and the IS-IS and Integrated IS routing protocols. You must know that the connection-oriented protocol is CONP, the connection-oriented service is CMNS, the connectionless protocol is CLNP, and the connectionless service is CLNS.

  2. Be aware that ISO-IGRP is a Cisco-proprietary routing protocol for CLNS based on IGRP.

  3. Understand the difference between IS-IS and Integrated IS-IS.

  4. Know how to define the different areas, levels, and router functions at those levels in IS-IS.

  5. Understand the process of OSI addressing and the intricacies of the NSAP address scheme, including the structure of the NSAP address. Remember that a NSAP address with the NSEL set to 00 is known as the NET.

  6. Be knowledgeable of the four types of IS-IS packets: LSP, Hello PDUs, PSNPs, and CSNPs.

  7. Have a working knowledge of the IP and OSI routing process with Integrated IS-IS, including the OSI forwarding database, routing process, and linking IS-IS domains.

  8. Know how to perform basic configuration for Integrated IS-IS and the associated commands:

    • is-type

    • isis circuit-type

    • isis metric

    • summary-address

    • isis priority

  9. Be familiar with the commands used for Integrated IS-IS troubleshooting and verification, such as the following:

    • show clns protocol

    • show clns interface

    • show clns neighbors

    • show isis database

    • isis priority
