The Intermediate System “to “Intermediate System (IS-IS) routing protocol is a flexible and robust routing protocol suitable for both ISO Connectionless Network Protocol ( CLNP ) and IP applications. In the IP world, it has emerged as the sole realistic alternative to OSPF for Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) applications in ISP internetworks. IS-IS was originally designed to be used as a dynamic routing protocol for the ISO CLNP and was later adapted for routing IP in addition to CLNP as integrated IS-IS or dual IS-IS. IS-IS is the IGP of choice in most tier 1 ISP environments and telecommunications companies, which explains why Cisco has included it in the BSCI exam knowledge base requirements. IS-IS is a link-state protocol comparable to OSPF. OSPF has enjoyed a more formal evolution, whereas IS-IS has developed as needs have arisen. It was originally called DECnet Phase V Routing and renamed to IS-IS when it was adopted by the ISO in 1988. |
