Learning Activity 11-6: Using Forced-Pair Comparisons

GOALS

The goal of this activity is to provide practice using forced-pair comparisons in placing priorities on a list of items.

MATERIALS

  • Training Instrument 12-3: Forced-Pair Comparisons

  • PowerPoint slides 9-35 through 9-39

  • plain notepaper.

TIME

  • approximately 15 minutes

INSTRUCTIONS

Distribute two copies of Training Instrument 12-3 to each participant.

Indicate that learning forced-pair comparisons is fairly straightforward, but that it is complicated enough to make it worthwhile to practice more than once. Therefore, everyone will be generating two lists. Although this will be individual practice, encourage participants to share some of their top-rated items after each round.

Round One: The Impatient Genie

Tell the participants to take a piece of paper and pen or pencil. Describe the scenario as follows : ‚“You have discovered a magic lamp and awakened the Impatient Genie. The genie will grant you seven things (not money or abstract concepts like happiness) that you can list within two minutes. Go! ‚½ (Give participants indicators of remaining time.)

Display the instructions slide (slide 9-36) again and then the example slide (slide 9-38) and assist anyone who needs help in completing his or her scoring.

Have participants share their top two items.

Round Two: The Witness Protection Program

Describe the second scenario as follows: ‚“You are being moved to an undisclosed location, where you and your family will be provided housing, clothing, food, and furnishings. You will be allowed to take along only seven personal items. ‚½ (Emphasize to participants that they will get such things as toothbrushes and that the seven items are presumably items that have sentimental or other value.) ‚“You have two minutes to make the list. Go! ‚½

Once again, ask them to share their top two items.
