Defining the Scope of Your Project Management Training Effort

The greatest threat to the success of any project (including your project to teach project management) is scope creep. We all intuitively understand this concept and its implications. However, for our purposes, it may be helpful to look at some of the dimensions of scope so we can better define our training project scope and manage the expectations of our training stakeholders.

  • Levels of material taught. Are you merely providing a simple project management overview for new project team members ? Are you providing a project management fundamentals workshop that will last a few days? People ‚ s definitions of even something as basic as ‚“fundamentals ‚½ will vary widely, so you will need to get fairly precise course objectives established early in order to predict the time and effort required to develop and deliver the training.

  • Location of learners. Are there multiple locations at which the workshops must be delivered? If the learning audience is widespread geographically , is there any possibility of delivering the training using e-learning or some blended approach that combines e-learning and live workshops?

  • Number of learners to receive the training. If most of the training will be in an instructor-led workshop, the number of potential learners will have a direct cost on the time and materials needed to deliver the training. On the other hand, large numbers of trainees may be a cue to pursue e-learning or a blended approach.
