| Rational XDE (Extended Development Environment) is a set of products that add modeling support to existing development environments. Rational XDE .NET Edition (shown in Figure 6.6) adds UML-based modeling support for Visual Studio .NET tools. The XDE product is an extension of the popular Rational Rose product; the key highlight is the tight integration with the Visual Studio .NET development tool for roundtrip engineering ”develop the model, generate the code, develop the code, and reverse engineer the model. Support for UML 1.4-based modeling, including Class, Component, Deployment, Use Case, Activity, Statechart, Collaboration, and Sequence Diagrams. -

Roundtrip engineering (source code to model, model to source code) support for multiple .NET languages including C#, Visual Basic .NET, and ASP.NET. Both automatic and on-demand synchronization between the model and code options are available. -
Reverse engineering of databases. -
Web-based publishing and reports for easy sharing of models between business and technical users. -
Support for applying design patterns to existing code through an extensive pattern library, including patterns such as AbstractFactor, Adapter, Bridge, Builder, ChainOfResponsibility, Command, Composite, Facade, FactoryMethod, Flyweight, Interpreter, Iterator, Mediator, Memento, Observer, Prototype, Proxy, Singleton, State, Strategy, TemplateMethod, and Visitor. -
Includes Rational PurifyPlus, a set of tools for runtime analysis of code. PurifyPlus, in turn , contains a set of tools, such as Purify (for runtime analysis of native and managed applications), PureCoverage (identification of untested code), and Quantify (a profiler for identifying potential bottlenecks in managed and native code). -
Includes Rational Unified Process (RUP) Configuration for Microsoft .NET developers, a set of proven best practices for software development, targeted for .NET application development.
