In Brief

  • Various efforts are underway to have .NET Framework available on other platforms. Key to these initiatives include the Microsoft Shared Source CLI, also known as Rotor, which provides a shared source model for researchers, Ximian's Mono Project, and DotGNU's Portable .NET initiative. Even though initial deliverables of some of these initiatives are available, a considerable amount of time is left before production quality applications can be developed and deployed on other platforms.

  • The next major release of SQL Server, code named Yukon, provides integrated support of CLR within the database. Developers will be able to write stored procedures using .NET programming languages and the ADO.NET database connectivity programming model. Other highlights of the Yukon release include full support of XML as a data type.

  • The Whidbey release of .NET Framework and Visual Studio .NET marks the next release of the .NET Framework. Key enhancements in this release include support for generics, anonymous methods , partial types enhanced data source connectivity, applets such as J# Browser Controls, and so on.

  • The next major release of Windows (both client and server), code named Longhorn, includes major enhancements to the Windows application programming model, including managed APIs for the underlying operating system, further integration of the .NET Framework into the OS, a completely redesigned task-based user interface, and a new SQL Server-based Windows File System (WinFS).

  • Visual Studio .NET Orcas represents the Visual Studio .NET release that coincides with the Longhorn release of Windows.
