Workshop

Review the questions and answers in this section to try to sharpen your Premiere editing skills. Also, take a few moments to tackle my short quiz and exercises.

Q&A

Q1:

When I use the Rolling, Slide, and Slip Edit tools, the clip frames shift in the monitor screens, showing the new edit points, but after a while they stop and won't let me move the edit point any farther. What's up?

A1:

You've reached the end of the line ”the beginning or end of the original clip. There are no additional head or tail frames to allow you to move the edit any farther.

Q2:

When I use the storyboard to make an "instant" music video, it inserts all the clips ahead of the music track. Why?

A2:

You did not check the Ignore Audio box. By leaving that unchecked, Premiere automatically includes all the natural sound in your project and puts the audio portions on the Audio 1 and Audio 2 tracks. I'm not sure why this happens ”it may be a bug ”because your video clips all go on the same track and the audio clips should all go on track 1. If you want to include nat-sound audio in your music video, place the music clip on the Audio 3 track.

Quiz

1:

You've completed a project that is exactly one minute long and needs to stay that length. You like one clip but want to shift its position slightly between two other clips. What edit tool do you use? Why?

A1:

The Slide Edit tool. It lets you slide a clip between two others, changing their in- and out-points while keeping the selected clip intact.

2:

What are the principal differences between the Image Mask and Gradient Mask transitions?

A2:

The Image Mask transition sees everything in black or white. No gray area for that guy. The Gradient Mask transition has a built-in transition motion, revealing the next clip either from the bottom of the screen going up, or starting at the top and going down.

3:

You created music to exactly fit your project's length using SmartSound Quicktracks, but your project ended up going a bit longer. How do you make the music fit the new project length?

A3:

Place your edit line at the end (or use the hotkey, End) to see the exact length of your project. Double-click the audio clip to automatically open Quicktracks. Click the Back button to go the Time window. Change the time to fit your new project length. Click Finish. If you edited any of your clips to fit the beat of the music, I'm afraid you'll have to go back and make some adjustments.

Exercises

1:

Create a sequence using regular forward motion, slow motion, stop action, reverse slow motion, and reverse full-speed motion.

2:

Two QuickTime transitions that differ from anything you'll find in the standard Premiere transition set are Implode and Explode. Apply those to a project and adjust the X/Y coordinates to set the start- or endpoint to match something in your video clip.

3:

Create multiple edits on two clips and have the first edit move from a specific location on the first clip and then have the second edit move from a specific spot on the second clip.
