Introduction

Microsoft Visual Studio Team System provides tools for software architects, software developers, software testers, and database professionals; however, perhaps its most important contributions are to project managers. In fact, Visual Studio Team System now provides project managers with tools that interact naturally with the rest of the project team and enable new levels of decision making with little effort when compared to traditional software project management tools.

Whom Is This Book For?

Simply stated, this book is written for your average everyday manager of a software project. This book does not assume that the reader is familiar with any specific project management discipline or methodology. Our focus for the book was to provide an out-of-the-box experience for a typical project manager. We have tried to be as generic as possible with regard to specific processes or methodologies because one of the strengths of Visual Studio Team System is its ability to be adapted to virtually any process or software development methodology. To provide context, however, we followed a generic project life cycle model and, because it represents much of the out-of-the-box experience of Visual Studio Team System from the perspective of a project manager, we made many references to the Microsoft Solutions Framework. That said, if you are involved in the management of a project that uses Visual Studio Team System, and you want to understand how to use the product, this book is for you.
