8.8 Summary

This chapter describes the models that are available to support distributed transactional operations. Additionally, we have provided some guidance for choosing a model.

The choice of a particular model depends on the system's requirements and its environment. The distributed-transaction model is particularly well suited to applications that require distributed resources to be available at all times. If distributed resources may not always be available and transactions can be easily rolled back, the queued-transaction model can be a good choice.

In designing a distributed system, keep in mind that a single model for distributed transactional operations may not suffice. It may be appropriate to use both models because each model has its own strengths and weaknesses.
