Dragging to Reposition a Clip

Another way to change the position of a clip in the sequence is to drag it completely away from its current position to a new location and insert it there. This will not change any of the clips prior to the insertion point, but all clips following will be pushed down the length of the inserted clip. Since no new clips are added to the sequence, the overall sequence length remains the same.

Dragging and dropping a clip to a new location in your sequence does not require any editing tool other than the default Selection tool. In this exercise, you will work with the Jimbo interview clips and rearrange their order.

1.

Click the 8-Jimbo Finished sequence and play it.

2.

Press A to choose the default Selection tool.

3.

To get right to the surfing dialogue after Jimbo introduces himself, drag the catch a wave clip left toward the name clip and let it snap to the end of that clip, but don't release the mouse.

As you drag, the Overwrite edit tool (a downward arrow) appears. If you were to release the mouse at this point, you would overwrite the material beneath the new clip and also leave a gap from the clip you are moving.

In the Canvas, look at the names of the clips in the two frames. These are the frames that would appear on either side of this clip if you dropped it in as an Overwrite edit.

4.

Now press and hold the Option key.

When you press Option, the pointer changes to a hooked downward arrow, indicating that you will be inserting this clip at this point.

The two Canvas frames display the frame before the current clip and the frame after it, as though you were inserting this clip.

5.

This is important: To complete this move, first let go of the mouse and then let go of the Option key.

6.

Drag the nose ride clip left. When it snaps to the end of the catch a wave clip, hold down the Option key to make sure you are inserting this clip at this location. When you see the hooked arrow, let go of the mouse and then let go of the Option key.

Project Tasks

1.

Drag the leash clip to follow the nose ride clip.

Tip

Don't forget that you can use Cmd-Z to undo any mistakes.

2.

Drag the carry head clip to follow the wax every time clip.

3.

Play the new configuration of clips in this sequence.

You may notice that a few of Jimbo's clips are very bright. You will learn how to correct this in Lesson 16.

Note

The DVD that comes with this book includes an exercise on the Trim Edit window. In this window, you can either Ripple or Roll edit points by previewing them. You can find this exercise in the Advanced Trimming appendix.
