Extending an Edit

A third way to trim a clip is to extend a selected edit point to a new location. Extending an edit always works in conjunction with the playhead location and the default Selection tool. The selected edit point snaps to the location of the playhead in the sequence. As with all trim options, extending an edit can make a clip longer or shorter. You can use this method to adjust two edit points at once, but that will be covered in the next lesson.

Extending an edit point takes only a few steps. The first step is to make sure your pointer is the default Selection tool.

1.

Press A, or click the default Selection tool in the Tool palette.

2.

Let's say you want to extend the end of the proud of kids clip 10 seconds. Move the playhead 10 seconds past the end of this clip. Use the Canvas or Timeline Location field or Timeline ruler as a guide.

3.

Select the Out point of this clip. Both sides of the edit point become selected.

4.

In the main menu, choose Sequence > Extend Edit, or press E.

The Out point is extended to the right 10 seconds.

Note

Not all edits have this much material to use in trimming. Sometimes you will trim just a few frames or a second at a time. It all depends on how long your original clips are.

5.

Let's go back the other way. Park the playhead earlier in this clip, where you trimmed it before, right after Jim says, "... really good so far also."

6.

With the Out point still selected, press E to extend the edit point back to the playhead location.

You can continue adjusting your edit point this way until you get it the way you want it.

Keep in mind that you can only extend an edit if you have enough clip material to support the move. If you have placed the playhead too far out of the clip's range of material, it won't be able to extend the edit to that location.
