Inserting Clips

So far, you have laid clips end to end in the Timeline. When you want to drop clips between already existing clips and still preserve the old clips just as they are, you must use an Insert edit. When you insert a new clip into the sequence, all clips following the newly inserted clip are pushed down the exact length of the clip's duration to accommodate the new edit. The sequence is now longer by that amount.

As in Overwrite editing, the place where a clip will be inserted into the sequence is determined by the location of the playhead.

Dragging to the Edit Overlay

In the Insert Edits sequence, there are several shots of sports activities. Between some of these clips, you will insert additional clips of people working out. Because you will be inserting clips, you will continue to expand the length, or duration, of the sequence with every clip you insert.

As with Overwrite editing, you can also use the Canvas window's Edit Overlay to make an Insert edit. Since Overwrite is the default, you must drag and drop the image of the clip from the Viewer onto the Insert section of the Edit Overlay.

1.

In the Browser, click the triangle to display the contents of the Insert Clips bin.

2.

Click in the Timeline, and drag the playhead to the first frame of the skater ecu clip. You can also use the up or down arrow keys.

Note

You may want to zoom in to the Timeline to see the name on the clip revealed. Or you can look for the thumbnail of the extreme close-up of the skater with sunglasses.

3.

Open the marked sword twirl clip into the Viewer.

4.

As you did with the Overwrite edit, click and drag the image to the Canvas Edit Overlay, but don't release the mouse.

Note

The Insert section is yellow, and its icon is of an arrow pointing to the right. That will remind you that all the following clips in the sequence will be moved forward to allow room for the new clip you are editing.

5.

Place the clip on top of the yellow Insert section, and when the section is highlighted, release the mouse.

The playhead jumps to the end of this clip. Let's insert another clip at this point.

6.

To review marking, open the skater glasses on clip, and mark an In point at 00:00:01;03 and Out point at 00:00:04;15.

7.

Drag the image from the Viewer to the Canvas window, and drop it on the yellow Insert section in the Edit Overlay.

8.

Play the new clips in the sequence.

Using the Keyboard Shortcut

As with Overwrite editing, Insert edits have a keyboard shortcut (F9). Let's add one more skater clip to the sequence.

1.

In the Viewer, open the skater skates forward clip.

2.

Play the marked portion of the skater skates forward clip by clicking the Play In to Out button in the Viewer.

Tip

You can also use the shortcut for this function, Shift-\ (backslash).

3.

Click in the Timeline to make it active, and press the up or down arrow keys until you are on the first frame of the mountain bikers clip. Look for the first-frame indicator in the lower left of the Canvas image.

4.

Press F9 to insert the skater skates forward clip into the sequence in front of the mountain bikers clip.

5.

Move the playhead back to play a few of the new clips in the sequence.
