Playing the Sequence from the Canvas

As you can see, the Canvas window is a visual display of your edited sequence. You can also control the playing of the sequence from the Canvas window, just as you do in the Timeline. In fact, many of the Timeline shortcuts work here as well.

1.

Click once in the Canvas window to make it active.

2.

Click anywhere in the Canvas scrubber bar beneath the image area; the playhead jumps to the point where you clicked.

The Timeline playhead moves in tandem with the playhead in the Canvas.

Note

In the Canvas window, the scrubber bar represents the full length of the sequence.

3.

Drag the playhead to the beginning of the sequence on the far left and then toward the end of the sequence on the right.

The duration of the current sequence is always displayed in the Duration field in the upper-left corner of the Canvas window. The specific location of the playhead is displayed in the Location field in the upper-right corner.

Final Cut Express refers formally to these fields as the Timecode Duration field and the Current Timecode field. Throughout this book, we will use the shorter reference of Duration and Location fields.

4.

Press the Home key to jump the playhead to the beginning of the sequence.

5.

Play the sequence by pressing the spacebar. Stop it after a few seconds by pressing the spacebar again.

When you press the spacebar to start and stop the sequence, the Canvas Play button light goes on and off.

6.

Play the sequence by pressing the L key. Double the speed by pressing L again.

7.

Stop the sequence, and press the left arrow key to move backward a frame at a time.

8.

Press the Home key to go to the beginning of the sequence, and then press the down arrow key to move forward to the first frame of the next clip. Continue moving forward through the sequence this way.

9.

Go to the sequence location 00:00:10;04 by typing this number in the Location field in the upper-right corner and pressing Tab or Return.

Tip

You can also click in the Location field in the Timeline, type a number there, and press Return to move the playhead to that location.

10.

Under the image in the Canvas window are a shuttle slider and a jog wheel. Drag the shuttle slider left or right to go backward or forward through the sequence at a variable speed. Drag the jog wheel to move forward or backward a frame at a time.
