The Timeline and the Canvas

In the previous lesson, you learned that the Browser is a container for all your project elements. The Timeline is also a container. But unlike the Browser, which holds all your raw materials, the Timeline holds just the specific items you select to tell your story.

You choose only a few items of clothing to wear from a closet filled with all your clothes. In the same way, you will now take only selected portions of your clips to place in the Timeline to build a sequence. This sequence is what the Timeline displays graphically.

The Canvas is where you see the sequence. The name of the sequence appears at the top of both the Timeline and Canvas windows, along with the name of the project.

1.

Click in the Timeline window and look at the title-bar information.

2.

Click in the Canvas window and look at the title-bar information.

These two windows work in tandem, and many functions can be performed in either window. Let's look first at the Timeline and use the Canvas just as a viewing area.
