Connecting Sources for Capture

The first step in capturing your source material is to properly connect your digital camera or digital tape deck to the computer through a FireWire cable. The FireWire cable has a different connector on each end. The smaller FireWire connector on one end goes into the camera or deck. The larger connector goes into your computer's FireWire port.

1.

Connect your DV camera or other DV source to your computer's FireWire port.

2.

Put a source tape in your camera or deck.

You can also connect your camera or deck to a separate video monitor, television set, or VCR, just as you would if you were simply screening your tape. However, this is not necessary because there is a preview image area within the Final Cut Express Capture function.

To capture material from an older, nondigital tape source, such as VHS, Betamax, or Hi8, you must connect that source to a separate digital converter box. The digital converter box converts the material into a digital source, which you can then capture into your computer through a FireWire cable.
