Preparing the Project

There is no project file for this lesson. Instead, you will capture and save clips into a new project file.

1.

Launch Final Cut Express by clicking its icon in the Dock.

When Final Cut Express opens, any project that was active when you last quit the program will open along with the program.

2.

Close any open projects, including any untitled projects.

Remember that when no sequences are open, the Canvas and Timeline windows close because they have nothing to display.

Before you create a new project, think about the standard you used to shoot the material you want to capture. Was it shot with NTSC or PAL equipment? Since the media in this book was captured with DV-NTSC equipment, the projects and sequences were created using the DV-NTSC preset. If you shot your personal footage using PAL or HDV equipment, you should change the Final Cut Express Easy Setup preset before you create a new project or sequence.

Tip

In the Easy Setup dialog box, each option controls presets for your sequence, capture, and device controls to capture and output media in the appropriate standard.

3.

To choose a different option, choose Final Cut Express HD > Easy Setup, or press Ctrl-Q.

Note

All the Final Cut Express settings windows use the shortcut letter Q.

4.

Click the Setup For pop-up menu and choose a preset that is appropriate for the media you are capturing. In addition to DV and HDV, you can also choose a setup for working with a DV converter. If you change the preset, an External A/V dialog box will open. Click Continue.

Tip

Select the Show All box to see all the setup presets in the pop-up menu.

Changing the preset affects only new projects and sequences, not those you have already created.

The details of the selected preset appear below the pop-up menu. Choosing a different preset affects only new sequences, not those you have already created.

5.

Choose File > New Project, or press Shift-Cmd-N, to create a new project and choose View as List in the Browser.

An Untitled Project tab appears in the Browser window along with a default sequence, Sequence 1.

6.

To rename this project, choose File > Save Project As, and enter Lesson 12 Project as the new name. Navigate to the Lessons folder on your hard drive and click Save to save the project there.

Note

What you are saving here is just the project file, not the place where the media will be stored. You will set that destination later in this lesson.
