Patching Advances in 11i

 < Day Day Up >

An interesting note, with 11i, patching became patch translation aware. If there are multilingual translations of a patch that you are applying, ADPATCH is supposed to alert you to that fact so you can take appropriate action if needed. It does not mean that if you do not have a language installed, you have to install a translation patch; it only makes you aware that there may be translations available if you need to make use of them.

Further, ADPATCH is now platform aware. If the patch is not a generic one, ADPATCH will check to make sure that the version of the patch that you are trying to install is the correct version for your OS.

Another new feature that has just recently been added to the application is the functionality of ADPATCH to check to see if a patch has already been applied. ADPATCH checks the patch's version, compares them against existing patches, and determines if one of the other patches that have been applied to your system might have included this patch as part of its makeup. If it finds indications that a patch might have been applied already, it double-checks with you to determine if you really want to apply this patch. Further, this functionality brings with it prerequisite checking. It checks to see if you have already applied prerequired patches and warns you if it finds any that it does not think you have. These added features depend, to some extent, on when the patch that you are applying was created, since there have to be keys within the patch itself to clue ADPATCH in, particularly with the prerequisite checking feature, but this added functionality will eventually be more and more useful as older patches are no longer applied and the newer patches are built to take advantage of these new bells and whistles.
