Control File-Related Parameters

CONTROL_FILE_RECORD_KEEP_TIME, a dynamic parameter, takes an integer value as its argument. The value of this parameter is the number of days that minimally must pass before any portion of the reuse section of the control file can be overwritten and reused. If the CONTROL_FILE_RECORD_KEEP_TIME amount of time has not passed for the oldest record in the reusable section and an additional record needs to be added, the record section (and by extension the control file) expands to allow for the insertion. The allowable values are any whole number between 0 and 365. If the CONTROL_FILE_RECORD_KEEP_TIME is set to 0, the control file never expands, and records are overwritten as needed.

It is important to remember that this parameter applies on the records in the control file that are circularly reusable (archive log records and backup records primarily). It does not apply to records concerning data files, tablespaces, redo thread records, and the like. These records are never reused unless the corresponding objects are dropped from the database.
