Dropping Control Files

Not only can you create new control files, you can also drop control files from the database. Say, for example, that you want to change the location of a control file because you determine that the current location is inappropriate. Before you decide that you are going to drop a control file, however, remember that the database must have at least two control files at the time when the drop occurs, and you should immediately multiplex them after you have deleted one.

To drop a control file, proceed with the following steps:

1.

Shut down the database.

2.

Edit the CONTROL_FILES parameter in the database's parameter file to delete the old control file's name.

3.

Restart the database.

This operation does not physically delete the unwanted control file from the disk. This means that there is a chance later that you will errantly try to use this control file to start your database. Use operating system commands to delete the unnecessary file after (and only after) you have dropped the control file from and successfully restarted the database.
