4.7. Conclusions

For Phase 2 in the transition to agility, the team's strategic metrics are

• Throughput Bells/iteration

• Efficiency Ideal hours/staff days

• Iteration length The length of time between planning sessions

To complete Phase 2, you must be gathering these metrics and reporting their values at the end of each iteration. Watching them over time will help your team improve their agility.

In addition to these three strategic metrics, the team may want to choose tactical metrics in support of that strategic vision. They can use the GQM approach to develop metrics that truly reflect the information of interest. Being aware of the risks and side effects of metrics should help ensure that these metrics activities are useful, but remember our agile metrics philosophies:

• Napkin metrics

• Simplify data gathering

• Rough numbers are good enough

• If it isn't changing, who cares?
