1:

Define ATA and IDA, and explain the differences.

A1:

Answer: The ATA interface is the drive controller interface and the standard that defines the drive and how it operates. IDE is the actual drive and the 40-pin interface and drive controller architecture designed to implement the ATA standard.

2:

What are the three major SCSI standards?

A2:

Answer:

SCSI-1 The original SCSI standard, approved by ANSI in 1986, defined the first SCSI bus.

SCSI-2 SCSI-2 was approved in 1994 as an extensive enhancement to the original standard that defined support for many advanced features.

SCSI-3 SCSI-3 was approved in 1996. SCSI-3 is a group of specifications that define the implementation of SCSI protocols on different physical layers.

3:

What is the main difference between a single-ended and differential SCSI interface?

A3:

Answer: On a single-ended interface, data travels over a single wire known as the signal line. There is a corresponding ground wire for the signal line. However, voltage is carried only on the signal line. A positive voltage is a 1, and ground voltage is a 0.

Differential SCSI uses a paired plus and minus signal level to reduce the effects of noise on the SCSI bus. Each signal is carried on a twisted pair of wires. A 1 is represented by a positive voltage on one wire and an equal but opposite negative voltage on another wire. A 0 is electrical ground, or zero voltage, on both wires.

4:

Which one of the following terms identifies the process in which the controller agrees on a transfer rate with each connected device during the initialization phase?

  1. Disconnect/reconnect

  2. Tagged command queuing

  3. Negotiation

  4. None of the above

A4:

Answer: C

5:

What is the purpose of tagged command queuing?

A5:

Answer: Tagged command queuing (TCQ) enables a drive to receive many commands and perform those commands without involving the SCSI bus. This allows other devices to use the bus.

6:

How many terminators should be on a SCSI bus and where should it/they be placed?

A6:

Answer: You must terminate each end of the SCSI bus.

7:

What are the three new features included with Wide-Ultra3 SCSI-3?

A7:

Answer:

  • Doubles the data burst of Wide-Ultra SCSI to 80MB/s, providing greater system throughput.

  • Quadruples the maximum cable length of a Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 bus to 12m, allowing increased flexibility when adding external storage or configuring clustered servers.

  • Maintains backward compatibility, allowing all previous SCSI implementations to be used on the same bus.
