This chapter explains the basic procedures for installing hardware upgrades and options, including the following:

  • Processors

  • Memory

  • Drives

  • PCI cards

This chapter also explains the process for removing hardware options and upgrades and how to troubleshoot a failed component installation.

A couple of notes are very important up front:

  • First, when installing hardware options and upgrades, always refer to the documentation that ships with the component. Save this documentation for future reference.

  • Second, heat-dissipation accessories included with the upgrade kits must be installed according to the instructions. Otherwise, component overheating could result in erratic system behavior or even system shutdown.
