 < Day Day Up >

Insight Manager 7, shown in Figure 16-2, is a Web-based management application that monitors HP servers, clusters, desktops, and portables. It can also manage third-party devices compliant with any of these standards: HTTP, SNMP, MIB, and DMI.

With a single click from the home page, you can view information about these devices. Communicating with the software agents installed during server setup, Insight Manager 7 automatically

  • Discovers all of the servers and management processors in your environment.

  • Shows summary health status for each device.

  • Provides one-click access to management resources such as

    • Insight Management agents.

    • Version Control.

16.5.1 Insight Manager 7 Functions

Insight Manager 7 aggregates important management information, such as device status and asset configuration, from managed devices throughout the IT environment. It ships with the capabilities described in this subsection:

  • Integrated database installation During installation, you can choose to install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) database or point to an existing SQL Server database containing performance, asset, and configuration data.

  • Autodiscovery and identification You can configure Insight Manager 7 to automatically discover and identify HP platforms as well as other HTTP-, SNMP-, and DMI-instrumented devices attached to the network. By default autodiscovery is set to run daily.

  • Discovery filters Discovery filters enable you to control the type of devices (servers, clients, management processors, and so on) added to the Insight Manager 7 database.

  • E-mail and paging notification Insight Manager 7 can send both e-mail and paging notifications based on the receipt of a specified event or a change in device status. This eliminates the need to constantly monitor a management console and helps maximize the productivity of IT personnel.

  • Group configuration Administrators can manage groups of devices simultaneously. Specified configuration settings can be extracted from a reference system, edited, and copied to multiple target systems.

  • Multiple-system version control and system software update Insight Manager 7, together with Version Control agents and the Version Control Repository Manager (VCRM), introduces an architecture for version managing and updating HP system software. The software maintenance architecture enables you to select a baseline set of software (BIOS, drivers, and agents) as the point of reference for version control across the entire managed environment or a selected portion of it.

    Note

ProLiant Support Paqs (PSPs) are sets of drivers, utilities, and management agents that have been ordered and tested for optimal performance and reliability on ProLiant servers. Although HP recommends that customers use PSPs to establish system software baselines, the VCRM also enables the creation of custom groupings of system software.

  • Management agent integration Insight Manager 7 automatically discovers the management agents and any other Web-based management application running at a set of predefined HTTP ports. Hardware status reported by the management agents displays in the device list.

16.5.1.1 ADDITIONAL BENEFITS

Insight Manager 7 also serves as the central launching point for other ProLiant Essentials products such as Lights-Out devices and ProLiant Essentials Performance Management Pack (PMP).

As the foundation for the PMP, Insight Manager 7 SP2

  • Displays server performance status.

  • Provides in-context launch of the PMP console.

  • Receives performance events from managed systems.

Insight Manager 7 ships with standard tasks and queries to discover and report on your systems from the moment of installation.
