Before I could play any multimedia, I needed a little program called XMMS, the Cross-Platform Multi Media System. XMMS, available from http://www.xmms.org/ , is probably the coolest MP3 player I've found, and it even has support for the 3DNow! extensions offered by my AMD processor. If you've got an AMD K6/2, K6/3, or Athlon, you'll want to enable the 3DNow! bit. I downloaded version 1.2.4, copied it to my /usr/src directory, and did the following:
tar zxvf xmms-1.2.4.tar.gz
cd xmms-1.2.4
./configure with-x enable-3dnow #I have an AMD K6/2. If you use an AMD CPU, enable this
make
su -c"make install"
Simple, eh? It's a quick compile, at about six minutes, so there's no need to leave your computer for this one.
