Web Sites You Shouldn't Live Without

A Web site is a tool? You bet it is! Presented here are Web sites all the authors frequent regularly.

www.linux.com

This is a good starting place if you're new to Linux. It's got news, downloads, stuff for developers, games information, hardware information, jobs, and a whole lot more.

www.linuxdoc.org

The Linux Document Project is a fantastic resource for all things Linux. This site is a huge repository of guides, HOWTOs, FAQs, and man pages. It also includes the Linux Gazette, an online magazine. This is definitely a stopping point on the Web for most anyone interested in Linux.

www. freshmeat .net

A massive index of open source software, freshmeat.net has been an absolute favorite source of information, links, and more on any software for Linux and other operating systems too.

www. sourceforge .net

Got an open source project? Want a free place to host the Web site and CVS archive? Do I need to continue? I think not.

www.slashdot.org

"News for Nerds. Stuff that matters." Need I say more? Not really, but I'm going to. Have you ever tried to get to a page on a Web site only to get a "timed out" error from your browser? Chances are the network is acting funny , the Web site is poorly designed or not working, or the page you are trying to access is being "slash- dotted ." Slashdot.org is so popular that when particularly interesting news blurbs appear, its readers have this knack of saturating the Web sites the news blurbs refer to. If you need a daily dose of techie news, Slashdot.org is definitely for you.

www.lwn.net

News on Linux ”lots of news on Linux. Where do they get all this stuff? My work is starting to suffer because there's so much to read on Linux. Life is good!

www.google.com

One of the best tools for the Internet is a search engine. I mention Google because of their technology, a massive cluster of Linux systems. Their use of tools, such as Linux, is a prime example of how effective open source software can be to achieve a goal.

www.lokigames.com and www.linuxgames.com

I'm sorry if I make a typo here. My fingers are cramped from an all-night Quake session on my 1Ghz Linux system! Games on Linux? Sure! Take a break from the grind and put your mind into gamer mode. Games on Linux is a reality my friend. If you didn't know about these sites or that there were games for Linux, then I suggest removing the very large rock off your person and getting to these sites. Support these companies! We want more games!

www.jabber.org

I just had to include this site. Jabber is an open source messaging system with an implementation of an instant messenger, like the infamous ICQ (Phonetic acronym "I seek you") and AIM (AOL Instant Messanger) clients . The key here is that Jabber is open source, and thus you don't get the same infighting you get with giant corporations hell-bent on making yet another dollar from you and me.
